  • How do I remove my post?

There are two ways to remove your post. If you've given your item away or received the item you requested, you should mark your post as gifted (if it was an offer) or mark your post as received (if it was a request).

Alternatively, you can withdraw your post if you need to remove it for any other reason.

  • What is Trash Nothing and how does it work?

The goal is to promote the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) by making it easy for people to give away their unwanted but reusable items to people who can use them.

You can post Offers for items you want to give away or Requests for items you need. You can give and get almost anything on Trash Nothing including food, clothes, furniture, electronics, books, plants, toys and much more. Just make sure you follow the rules and guidelines when posting and replying.

Even things you might not consider reusable like cloth scraps, scratched CDs and broken appliances sometimes find homes with artists looking for materials or tinkerers looking for an interesting project or spare parts. Items you offer aren't expected to be in perfect condition as long as you accurately describe their condition when you offer them.

For example, here is how offering an item works:

    1. You have a bike you don't need and you want to give it away.
    2. You post an Offer that describes your bike.
    3. People in your local area who are interested in your bike will reply to your post to contact you privately.
    4. You choose which person you would like to give the bike to.
    5. Between the two of you, you arrange a time and place for them to come and pick up the bike.
    6. Your bike is picked up and you mark your Offer post as gifted so other people know that it is no longer available.
    7. You've given away your bike with little effort to someone who can use it, met someone new from your community and kept something out of the landfill. Great for you and the planet!

Similarly, when you need something, you can post a Request and if someone has what you need, they will contact you to offer it.

So next time you're cleaning out the garage, moving to a new place or about to throw something away, don't forget that someone on Trash Nothing might be able to use your unwanted stuff.

  • How do I withdraw my post?

To withdraw your post, go to the Your Posts page and click on the post that you want to withdraw. Then click the option labelled "Mark as withdrawn".

  • How do I repost?

First, view your post on the site. You can find your post by going to the Your Posts page and clicking on the title of the post that you want to repost.

Once you are viewing your post, you should see an option labelled "Repost". Once you click on repost, it will automatically fill in the new post form with the correct information and then you just have to click the Submit button.

Alternatively, you can simply fill out and submit the new post form manually. The repost button just saves you some time.

  • How do I view my posts?

You can view and manage your posts on the Yours Posts page.

When you are logged in, a link to the Your Posts page is in the account dropdown menu that is at the top right of most pages (open the menu by clicking the menu icon with 3 horizontal bars). Once you open the account dropdown menu, click the link labelled "Your Posts" to open the Your Posts page.

  • I replied to a few posts but I never got any responses?

Sometimes emails end up in people's spam or junk mail folders so make sure you check the messages page and your spam mail folder for replies (sadly it's impossible to know if an email ends up in a recipients spam mail folder). And it never hurts to resend your message if you don't hear back within a day or two.

This can also happen when someone posts a popular item that causes them to get a lot of replies. Rather than reply to everyone, people often only reply to the person they choose to gift the item to. It's always up to the person giving away an item to choose who they want to receive their item so responding first doesn't mean you'll receive an item. Your best bet is to always send polite messages and be clear about when you can collect.

Other times, you won't receive responses because people forget to mark their offers as gifted. This causes their offers to stay published when they should have been removed. To help prevent this, posts are automatically removed from the listings after 90 days.

And a lot of posts get claimed within a few hours or days of being posted. So you're more likely to get a response if you reply soon after a post is published. You can see new posts more quickly by getting the digest emails more frequently or creating email alerts or by enabling push notifications.
