Magic carpets
I shared this a while ago, but it's my favourite 'trash nothing' story of all.
My daughter was moving into a house previously occupied by an elderly couple. They hadn't had any children or pets, so their carpets were very clean. They were also top quality, in excellent condition, had underlay, and were very, very old fashioned.
My daughter was all set to cut them up and throw them in the skip as "no-one would want those old-fashioned things." I told her to hold off for a few days, and posted them on Trash nothing.
I was contacted by a young couple, both divorced with children, who had fallen in love and were all moving in together. They had bare floors and very little money. I sent them pictures and measurements and, amazingly, every carpet was either the correct size or a bit too big. They were 'over the moon.' Once fitted they sent me photos of their (now) cosy house, with messages of deepest gratitude. Recycling the carpets saved them £1000s, and they even liked the patterns. It taught my daughter the lesson, too, that there's always someone who can make use of just about anything.
