Yes it's empty, but if you cook with propane and have ever run out of gas while searing ribeyes and corn on the cob or zucchini are cooking, it's nice to be able to screw in your back up can. Just take this to any major supermarket or hardware store, and for $20 and exchange, you're cooking with crisco. A new tank is $40, or $60 with gas.
