Pink Hardy Geranium seedling (Morden SM4)

- Here I have a hardy pink geranium plant that is herbaceous, which means they come up each year. The first photo is in my garden last year which grows to about a metre by a metre. This plant has been out all year and as you can see it’s happy and is not affected by frost. It can be planted right now as soon as the soil is good in your garden. It may be a small looking thing now but it has big aspirations. Hardy Geraniums are great fillers and do well planted amongst other plants like roses or spaces that are difficult. I wouldn’t be without them. All I do to these plants every year it’s just cut them down at the end of the summer and they grow basically on their own with no real attendance.

I have cut the foliage back because they need to recover when planted. They will die down and come up in the spring. Either plant the whole bag or remove the plants. They can be planted singly if you wish

- This is a very easy to grow plant. The flowers shown are in my own garden last August and the slugs don’t seem to bother them which is great. As you can see they make clumps I only ever had one plant which I have divided up over the years. I do what they call the Chelsea chop in May. This means I literally take the shears to it and reduce t by half. In another part of the garden I’ll let it grow taller. An easy to grow a plant and all it needs is to be cut down at the end of the season. It will pop up again next year.

- If you want a statement plant this is it. It can reach 5 feet in height and requires a moist well-drained soil. It will come back every year and will flower from August until September. Even when not in flower the foliage is stunning. Of course I have grown seedlings which will need to be kept in until the weather is warmer and then you can plant it out . The bees absolutely love it and of course it can be eaten. If you’re not familiar it’s a globe artichoke. I do have a few they are not all this size, but if you want to fill the space it’s perfect. I have just this moment dug it up, it's just in a clump of soil. Try not to disturb it, just literally put it in the ground as is.

- It is called several different names. This is a very unusual plant and it will NOT overwinter in this country. It cannot and must not be planted out until May. Keep it on the windowsill. However if you take cuttings which I do and keep the small one going in the winter. I plant it out in the summer which I’ve just done and it will grow quite large. In a pot. Always grow Herbs in full sun. It can be used in exactly the same way as the normal Thyme. It is quite a new cutting so please let it grow a few more roots before planting out.
