530 crosswords (Bartley Green)
Expired
If you like crosswords this might be right up your street. A handful have been attempted at the front but that still leaves 530 so it's a shame to throw it away. The photo gives you an idea of the standard. Don't think it's too high. And the answers are in the back if you want to cheat.

A bit of Birmingham history (Bartley Green)
Expired
Just discovered these old newspapers that document some of Birmingham's history. First one is about life in Victorian Birmingham. Trains arrived in Brum almost as the same time as Victoria's accession. What were trains and stations like then. See some of the amazing Victorian buildings that have been destroyed. What were schools like in 1830s? And much more. Lots of photos, mostly in black and white. Second one is about national and local changes in the 1950s and 60s. Third one is in 2 parts. It looks back on 1969 using front pages from the Birmingham Post throughout the year. Last one takes a similar approach to 1963.

Anyone out there into politics and elections in particular. I've got 4 newspapers from a day or two after an election. Birmingham Evening Mail 4 May 1979 when Thatcher won her first election. Guardian May 11 1983 when she won her second. Evening Mail special April 10 1992 when John Major had a surprise win. Finally The Times Election special 3 May 1997 when Blair won his first election. A bit of history. Any takers?

World cup souvenirs (Bartley Green)
Gifted
Giving away a selection of books and magazines about World cups from 1966 to 2010. They were all issued before the event so look ahead with info about the teams and venues and fixtures. I have probably written the scores in but if not it's easy to find the results on line. There are all in English apart from the official 1974 world cup programme which is in German as the event was held in Germany that year.

Wind up radio (Bartley Green)
Gifted
This wind up radio is probably 15 years old now and there are more advanced models out there now. I haven't used it for a while but checked yesterday and everything still works. Looks like I've had to repair the wind up handle in the past but it still charges the battery. You can also charge it via a 6V transformer but I don't have one. As well as the radio there's a 3 LED light at the front and a siren. It comes in the original box with instructions. Guess it's really a toy.

Quiz buzzers (Bartley Green)
Gifted
I made this about 10 years ago. Haven't used it for about 5 years. Found it yesterday and there's still life in the battery. Pressing one button turns on a green LED on the black control unit. Pressing the other button turns on the buzzer. So the quizmaster needs to see/hear who pressed first.

Drinking bird (Bartley Green)
Gifted
This is a perpetual motion toy. It's about 15cm high. You wet the head and join the body to the legs to start. The bird then gradually tips forward and when he sees the bowl of water he dives in for a couple of sips before going back upright and the process repeats. I've also got an article that explains the mechanism.

I haven't used this for ages so don't think I need it anymore. I haven't got any batteries to check it but as you can see from the photos the circuitry looks OK. Worst case might need a new bulb. Looks like it needs 2 C batteries.

Halford rear bike rack (Bartley Green)
Gifted
Decided I'll not have a need to use this again. It's probably 20 years old and hasn't been used for 10 but still has some life left. I used it with my Ford Escort but I think it will fit most hatchbacks. It takes 3 bikes. There are 3 places where the profile can be altered to suit your car. It comes with 3 types of strap. The strap with the dumbell shaped ending fits at the top of the door. The strap with the hook fits on to something suitable underneath the car. The other strap fits round the side of the door. If there aren't any suitable attachment points under your car there are straps to fit it to the bottom of the door. Originally there were rubber attachments which went on the support arms to hold the bike frames in place but most of these have now split. So some other way of holding the bikes on is required eg short strap. It says 45kg is the max weight it can take.

Dragon speech recognition software (Bartley Green)
Gifted
Found this hiding in a cupboard. Must be at least 10 years old. Can't remember where it came from and don't think I ever used it. Includes a mic to record speech and a dvd with the software to convert it to text. Operates on Windows 7 so don't know if latest versions of Windows will support it. But if you want to try it's all yours.
