It's not clear from the photo, but you need a wooden base to sit the splitter on eg a round from a tree (which is what I did). Then, where you see the white bit, you bring it up and thrust it down. It has a cutting blade on the end and this cut's the wood. Hope that makes sense!!

My friends make twiddle muffs, like in the photo, for people who have dementia. Some people with this condition find it soothing to fiddle and twiddle.
