Fantasy Amethyst crystals (Keresley Newlands CV7)
A science toy from the past when chemistry teachers actively encouraged young scientists to conduct experiments at home one of the earliest and easiest was growing a crystal garden using some of the crystals found in almost every home; salt, sugar, bath saltsetc. Dangling a thread from a pencil resting across a clear glass jar containing a saturated sugar solution and seeing crystals form on it was fascinating but soon became boring; Although the crystals could form branches twisting and curling, they lacked colour. but dad could often get hold of som copper sulphate or verdigris from his garage or greenhouse to introduce blue and green into your garden. Those can still be obtained from garden supplies and hobby shops. This tub came from the Science Museum shop in London, opened but never used
