4 crochet hook &cotton yarn (Woodley RG5)

I've been challenged to make a pair of bootees for a baby due in March. I've never crocheted but am told this is what I need. If anyone has a hook this size that's unwanted and some cotton yarn I could practise with I'd be very grateful. TIA.
