I am giving away 8 dvds of what my friend Chris assures me are the fundamental video texts of anime as a genre. I assume they are all safe for children to watch - except maybe Vampire Hunter D (it seems to have a lot of scary and bloody violence). Chris sent these videos to me for Christmas a LONG time ago and I am ashamed to say I never watched any of them. I just don't dig anime, right?
Anyway, the videos up for grabs are:
Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis
Momoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell
Miyazaki's Spirited Away
Robot Carnival (apparently NOT by an anime auteur)
Hayno Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, from the novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi
25th anniversary edition Akira
Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa
Chris also included an gushingly enthusiastic, multi-paged, typed description of anime as a genre, trying to convince me of the value of these cartoons. His actually honestly sweet and informative essay includes all kinds of information about anime/manga in general and the specific videos he sent me. I am going to include it with the videos because he didn't write anything personal to me in the letter, but it might be useful to anybody who wants to watch the videos. It is also just cool to see so much devotion to an art form.
