If you want this laptop give me your postcode. If you don't I will ignore your email. Please tell me why you think you should get it. I will not make up my mind until Friday and you need to be able to collect on Saturday or Sunday 8GB Ram, 236GB SSD, 1 USB C, 2 USB and 1 HDMI ports. The battery is dead but it works fine off the mains lead. The only software on it is Paint.net and the free version of Avira. Two 30cm Fluorescent Light Tubes (New Mills SK22)
It's a bit of a long shot but if I thought this was worth a try! They've been stored for a few years but were put away as working. They were for a safety light that had battery back up for power cuts. I also have the plastic cover for one of the lights. -- MODERATORS REMINDER FOR MEMBERS -- Please remember to check your account for 'Chat' messages from other members and / or site volunteers. Broken 'Asus X59GL' laptop computer (Levenshulme M12)
Please note, if you are looking for a laptop to use right away for school-work or business, this is NOT suitable. This laptop is offered for repair, or for taking apart to reuse its innards. Brand: Asus. Model: X59GL. Screen: 15.6 inches In terms of both technology and prior deployments, this is an old laptop. Originally acquired in 2009 it has travelled far and has been worked hard. They keyboard doesn't reveal the age and prior use because the original keyboard literally wore-out and was replaced, as were the screen hinges. The critical problems are with the screen. It started having vertical lines on the left-third of the screen. These were present most of the time, but not always. Then, very recently, the backlight stopped working. Video is still available via HDMI (after pressing the appropriate keys) and, I presume, it will still appear on the VGA port, but I haven't tried. The vertical lines are only almost constant (i.e. very occasionally the image is perfect) and hence I suspect that the lines are due to a connector or cable problem rather than a fault with the screen or integrated circuits. The cause of the backlight malfunction is not known and hasn't been investigated. The other recalled problem is that the lid-catches have been removed (possibly they broke, but I no longer recall). The hard-disk has been removed but the laptop originally contained a 250GB SATA disk, and most recently contained a 1GB SHDD device. It will boot from USB but the USB ports are only USB2.0. The BIOS is a 2006 edition, and does not implement UEFI. The originally supplied operating system was Microsoft Vista, and the recovery disk for this is present. In its working life it operated with various editions of OpenSUSE GNU/Linux ... probably starting with v11.1 or v13.1, but just before the backlight stopped working I booted OpenSUSE 15.6 from a USB-attached drive and was running the computer with that. The motherboard has two Pentium 64-bit cores running at 2GHz, and 4GB of RAM. For web-browsing, document editing and similar 'administrative' tasks the performance was always more than adequate. The power-supply is not original. The case has a crack, and there are some scratches. As far as I know, the screen problems are the only functional problems. The DVD hasn't been used for a long-time but was working when last used. Likewise the SD slot, and WiFi. The audio ports also haven't been used recently but were heavily used in the past so might be worn. Ethernet, USB, HDMI and the built-in speakers were all in use recently. The laptop is now back in its original packing materials and carton. The original manuals (for what little they are worth) are present, as are the original CDs (not recently tested so might have degraded). Collection will be from Longsight, M12, near Crowcroft Park. If you could make use of this laptop and would like to be considered, please provide a contact name and contact telephone number. Thank you.
