HP printer cartridges (Li vermore)

Why do printers fail right after you've bought cartridges? I have two packages of HP 92/93 cartridges, still in packaging. I'd like to gift these to two people (if there are two people who still use these cartridges). I'm in South Livermore near 84 & Concannon.
