This is a mains water softener which I had installed in my last house. The water where we are is pretty soft so we don't need it. It is probably well over 20 years old and hasn't been used for 10 years....
It works by softening the water and automatically backwashing the filters at regular intervals with the salt. It does not make the water salty! It is simple to install and takes standard water softener salt which I used to buy from Pure Choice Ltd, which used to be based in Shapwick.
