The handset requires 2 x AAA rechargeable batteries (400 mAh) in the handset as shown in the photo. When the handset is on the base unit the batteries get charged up.
Using an Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) this phone can be used with a digital phone line when the old copper,analogue system is changed to digital only. You will have to get in contact with your phone/broadband provider.
Not sure if the green batteries in the photo are working as I don't use a landline phone now and it is quite a few years since I used it.
