Xbox One Controller (E10)

Hello, I've been given an Xbox One (not S or X) but without a controller. I'd like to use it but have not been in the console game since N64 - I know, old - so I have no idea 1) If it works properly 2) what kind of controller I have to use with it to find a used one. If anyone has a spare controller for it that's hanging around in the Leyton/Walthamstow area, I'd happily even just borrow it to see what I can do with the console. Thank you!
