Beginner Sewing Machine (Laurel)

Ive never sewn a day in my life but have decided to learn. Id love to know how to hem pants (rather than use that tape stuff, staples or safety pins). Im also looking into classes but first things first - Id like a simple, working sewing machine. If you've got one that works and would like a new home, then please let me know. Thanks in advance.
