It’s free in the sense that the base rate is $0/month, BUT Taxes and fees 911 Service Fee:$1.00 Regulatory Compliance Fee:$1.87 Local Interconnection Recovery Fee:$2.69 Disability Access/enhance 911 Services Surcharge:$1.50 State Sales Tax:$0.29 Federal Regulatory Fee - Interstate Telephone Service:$0.01 Total:$7.36 Furthermore, if you want their Premier services (which provides Caller ID, Caller ID blocking, NoMoRoBo, voicemail, etc.), it’s $9.99/month on top of the taxes and fees (though there’s a $20 discount the first year). The box comes with a new phone number. If instead you want to port your old number, that costs $39.99 plus tax, unless you sign up for a year of Premier.
