*Lily-of-the-valley--low-growing groundcover with small wands of fragrant white bells bloom in May. Likes shade, spreads readily.
*Snowball bush (hydrangea)--grows into a bush covered with soft-ball sized clusters of small white blooms. An old-fashioned staple. Needs room to spread a bit. Pleasant all year. Glorious in bloom.
*Garden phlox--old-fashioned thigh-high perennial with clusters of pink, rose, or white blooms in July.
