Whitehead is a small town on the Antrim coast in Northern Ireland. Just over 2 years ago we established a small core group of six people - all women - following a public meeting. After support from RC Belfast and Information Sessions ‘recruiting’ volunteers we had our first RC on 1 July 2023 becoming the tenth RC in Northern Ireland. We have been lucky to have a few experienced ‘peripatetic’ volunteer fixers join us regularly. Tools for Solidarity are always welcome and popular for sharpening tools, knives, etc, and checking out sewing machines. We hold three popups a year - the size of the town and the numbers of volunteers don’t allow for much more than this atm. We have not been able to afford to hold RCW in the Community Centre but some local churches, which are embedded in the community, have been supportive and been happy to take a donation towards the cost of a venue. We just get by financially and are proud to be part of a global effort to cut waste and consumption; to build community and connect people by way of repair. Every event is a joy! People pop in with and without a repair. Some come to check us out, to chat, have a cuppa and a bun. We are an unincorporated association with a bank account which could make some fundraising to facilitate plans possible.
