To keep insects from eating you while you sit in the garden. You unscrew the black cap on the top, fill the reservoir underneath with lamp oil, stick the bottom of the pole into the earth, and light the wick. The little bamboo hat is for snuffing it out when you've finished.
A well-meant present from my parents many moons ago. I've hung onto them because they are such handsome things, and whenever I see them in the shed it reminds me of sitting in garden with Mum and Dad, even though we only once got round to using them - our garden sitting is usually less organised and involves drinking enough that you don't notice the insects.
We did test them this summer and they do work. There's a couple of litres of lamp oil you can have too, though it doesn't smell all that lemony any more. Perhaps a drop or two of essential oil in it would help.
Collection from Stoke Saint Milborough, or could drop off in, or very close to, Ludlow.
