An APC Back-UPS CS 650 (i.e. an Uninterruptable Power Supply) designed to keep key IT things going long enough in a power cut for you to close down in a controlled manner. With the right software app, it can link direct to your PC (via the cable I've included) to do the controlled close down automatically without losing any data.

This used to work brilliantly (we had lots of very short power cuts round here) when I was running my PCs on Windows, but I've never quite managed to configure it properly since we migrated to Linux.

Warning - it is HEAVY as it has a big battery in it. I have replaced the battery at some stage - there's a great battery place Shield Batteries on Stansted Road, Bishop's Stortford - but I can't vouch for the state of it now as it hasn't worked for me recently (see above) although it has been plugged in until the last few days so should be OK.
