decorative heron (Britannia)

This is a project I've been meaning to tackle all summer – which is now about to end.

I scavenged the bird from a friend's garbage, and repainted it – now I need to add some legs. I have a couple of sections of thin pole (curtain rail) that might work ... but I can't cut them, and have no idea how to put them together.

Can anybody with a) tools, and b) know-how, help me?
