Lamp detaches from base. Takes 13w plug-in CFL bulb. One of the knobs to adjust the lamp no longer stays on, but you can still do so with a small wrench. Fully extended, it measures about 41 in. from base to the tip of the lamp. Works fine. I've replaced it with a new lamp.
