(With a cassette loaded, pressing PLAY gives a few clunks as if the cassette had reached the end of the tape - which it hasn't - and refuses to play. No other symptoms.)

That is, these were sold as professionally-taped counterparts to vinyl LPs -- they are not home recordings. "Please Please Me" : The Beatles "Stay" : The Hollies "In The Hollies Style" : The Hollies "Dance With The Shadows" : The Shadows "Goon But Not Forgotten" : The Goons (two episodes of the 1950s radio show) They have not been played for about 40 years, so the sound quality cannot be guaranteed.
